Fall Fly Fishing Report

Fall Fly Fishing Report

Fall fly fishing in Southeastern Minnesota (SE MN) offers a unique experience as the region's spring-fed streams create excellent conditions for trout fishing. It is now officially Catch and Release fishing only. Here's what you can expect and some tips for a successful trip in the Driftless.

Key Driftless Streams in SE Minnesota:

- Whitewater River (and its tributaries: Middle, North, and South branches)

- Root River (and its tributaries, including South Fork and North Fork)

- Trout Run Creek

- Rush Creek

- Wisel Creek

These streams are renowned for their populations of brown, and rainbow trout.

Why Fall is Special for Fly Fishing in SE MN:

1. Cooler Temperatures: Fall offers more comfortable fishing conditions with cooler air and water temperatures, which helps the trout become more active.

2. Fewer Anglers: With fewer people out fishing compared to summer, it provides a more peaceful experience.

3. Beautiful Scenery: The autumn colors and scenic bluff landscapes make for a visually stunning backdrop while you fish.

4. Trout Behavior: Brown trout become more aggressive during their pre-spawning period (late October to early November), making them more likely to strike.

Techniques and Tips: - Match the Hatch. Pay attention to insect hatches. Fall can see BWO (Blue-Winged Olive) hatches, as well as caddisflies and midges. -

-Terrestrials: Grasshoppers, ants, and beetles are still viable until the first hard frost. These can be effective, especially near grassy banks.

- Nymphs and Streamers. Fishing with nymphs (like Pheasant Tails and Hare's Ears) or streamers (like Woolly Buggers) can be highly productive in the fall.

- Stealth is Key. The water is often clear, so a cautious approach and light tippets (5x or 6x) are recommended.

Best Time of Day. In fall, fishing tends to be best during the late morning to mid-afternoon, as the air and water temperatures warm up slightly, making the trout more active.

Gear Suggestions. - Rod: A 3-6 weight fly rod is usually sufficient for these streams.

- Waders and Layers. Water can be chilly, so dress in layers, and ensure your waders are warm enough for cool weather.

- Polarized Sunglasses. These are essential for spotting fish in clear water. SE Minnesota is a gem for fall fly fishing, with pristine waters and a relaxed pace perfect for trout anglers.

On October 15 trout fishing is only acceptable in designated areas.
